Narcos basically chronicles the stories of the infamous drug cartel, a real life incident that took place back in the ’70s. The set timeline of Narcos for the pilot season is from the late 1970s to 1992 when he first started dealing and manufacturing cocaine.

The series follows the narrative of the DEA Agent Steve Murphy who was working in Columbia. The series revolves around the time when Pablo Escobar first got his hands dirty with cocaine trades.

A low-key tycoon who had a well-established business in the black market in Medellin, Pablo’s business proceedings mainly included transporting a truckload of illegal goods across states and cities in Columbia on a daily basis. Moreover, most of it was during the time when it was strictly forbidden.

It was through this trade that he came across his business pal Mateo “Cockroach” Moreno, who brought the idea of them going into business together to the table. Mateo was also a Chilean cast-out and chemist, so things couldn’t have gotten any smoother. The plan was this – that Mateo would be the producer, while Escobar would be the distributor of the most profitable drug – cocaine.

They hunt rainforests down to find the perfect spot and build a compact little lab in the dense growth to stay hidden from the human eye. This lab was Moreno’s production lab, where he’d spent most of his time making cocaine.

As time passed by, they expanded the lab by building additional buildings and thereby increasing its production. Eventually, Pablo starts to grow his business and production, and this time to supply more states of the United States.

They started seeking help from Carlos Lehder for transporting the drugs in large amounts to Miami. In little to no time, their cocaine production and business start to become a cult favourite among the rich and the famous.

But this had an adverse effect. The demand for cocaine in American markets started growing, resulting in a huge cash inflow into Columbia for the same. So much so that the DEA task force had to be sent to investigate the matter.

All this while, the one whose perspective we have been viewing season one with, Murphy, gets teamed up with Javier Pena. Murphy and his team were tasked with the assignment of working alongside the Columbian authorities, more precisely the one led by Colonel Carrillo; and put an end to the inflow of cocaine into the United States for once and for all.

Certain events transpire, including a series of backstabbings and betrayals from Pablo Escobar’s own, loyal mates. So much so that in the end, Pablo finds it impossible to hide anymore, and gets caught by DEA Murphy and his men. He gets thrown into the prison, but surprisingly, he finds an escape and manages to flee. The season ends just here – Pablo having escaped from the prison.

The second season picks up exactly where the pilot season left off. Escobar and his men were gathered right outside the premises of La Catedral, but soldiers were way too scared to rush in and arrest the infamous drug tycoon.

Meanwhile, the United States turn the game around by bringing in the CIA and seeking their involvement in the case at the embassy. Initially, things run smoothly for Pablo has his men don’t really turn against him, and all stay loyal.

However, men are but men and times are a-changing. Things start to take a turn for the worse when Escobar realises he needs more time and way more resources to stay hidden from the government officials.

This is turn starts to frustrate his men; as they start getting impatient with him – resulting in some turning their backs against him. And it was only obvious, you can trust someone to make a comeback for only so long. Escobar would implement many tricks to get away from the eyes of the government.

Two of his most famous ones were hiding inside the trunk of a taxi cab and riding around the city when need be, and hiring young men to look out for government officials and their whereabouts and inform him about the same.

The first part of his “new normal” life included him mercilessly killing people who would try to break away from his team; while giving hefty chunks of cash to the community on the side. Throughout the season, Escobar and the Columbian police keep getting involved in fierce battles on multiple occasions, which caused a lot of unrest and problems in the whole of Columbia.

Tables turn when people in Cali cartel start taking in the exiled members from Escobar’s cartel, and form an alliance against him. Not only this, but they also sought the support of the CIA-backed anti-communal group as well.

To everyone surprise, the one Agent Murphy was teamed up with in the first season, agent Javier Pena works as a secret agent for this anti-communal group, and they go on a killing spree by murdering Escobar’s men and claiming responsibility as “Los Pepes”.

However, the worst befalls when Escoabr’s best men get caught red handed and taken in, who in turn agree to betray him. This makes the drug kingpin take to his heels, as he and his bodyguard run away and seek refuge in a safe house.

In the midst of these unprecedented times, he manages to celebrate his 44th birthday in the safehouse itself (well, at least some good came out of it!). But Escobar starts to get restless and tries to contact his family – which works to the DEA’s advantage.

They manage to track the radio transmissions and locate his safe house, where they reach shortly. They corner him at the rooftop and shoot him twice – and even though he had a fair chance of surviving the injuries – he doesn’t get one as one of the men executes him, and all of them shout “Viva Columbia!”.

Escobar’s wife finds herself in a pickle and seeks the help of Cali Cartel to help her flee the country altogether. Agent Pena doubts that he’d be sacked off but finds himself surprised when instead he is asked to offer his intelligence against Cali Cartel, which subtly hints at the fact that he might be offered further involvement in the DEA.

Season three is what we’d say had the most “Narcos-tic” ending to it – especially the scene where thirty people on bikes rode in. That being said, we can’t deny that the third season offered a few rushed endings, a few loose strings here and dissatisfaction there; but overall, surely lived up to the hype of it all.

The ones who had worked it out how a drug war really pans out end up getting what they want (well, a bit of it.) The ones that had no clue of what exactly happens kind of ended up disappointed.

For example, Freddy Moya has always been an infamous casanova, walking around with his purple shirt and a constant smirk. The one to seduce Pallomari’s wife in the first place decides hat he can somehow manipulate the cartel into killing Pallomari for once and for all; and gain control over it.

But the plan comes to a dead end when even after constant persuasion, Freddy realizes that David is not up for negotiation at all. Instead, he rather wanted to crush Freddy’s hand in a meat tenderizer than tell him Pallomari’s location – which makes Freddy fail in his master plan.

Pena on the other hand had better luck this season. He finally got the payoff in Pallomari’s grand jury testimony where he defied and went against his original orders – the six month surrender deadline.

He does get his fair share of appreciation though, especially when he gets congratulated for being able to play the system like a snitch, but disappointment sets in when they tell him that it still doesn’t mean there would be anything from the justice department.

Pena makes the tables turn in a way one couldn’t imagine. He does an interview with his friend who was also a reporter, letting the cat out of the bag by exposing leaked tape recordings between President Samper and Cali’s bagman.

This shatters the plans of the cartel men who were stuck inside the prison. The ones who were celebrating their upcoming freedom from the iron bars were now sitting there shattered as their plan crumbled down.

The Rodriguez brothers were handed in for their crimes, while Pacho was killed during his jail stint itself. And the only person who successfully managed to walk out of custody was Chepe. But things didn’t look good on that front either as he was executed by the Castano brothers.

Also, Jorge spent most of the finale trying to negotiate with the DEA agents regarding providing him protection if he serves as the witness, but that was about it. When Pallomari hams up with the jury, Jorges is basically sent away with a new name and now works at an automobile shop. It takes a moment for it to sink in to Jorge that he will never get to return to Columbia; ever again.

The season ends with a twist that no one saw coming. David runs to the airport with his hitmen to gun Jorge down and get the cartel to his name entirely. In the process, even before he reaches there, the Northvalley gunmen instead start firing – and kill him and his men; an ending that no one in their wildest dreams could fathom. David breathes his last few breaths on the ground, with a Northvalley gunman beside him.

Conclusion

The directors reset the cast and brought a brand new series called Narcos: Mexico, which is also referred to as Season 4; even though it technically isn’t. However, we’d recommend you to watch that too, once you’re finished with this!
